5 Essential Smartphone Privacy Settings To Change Right Now

We use our smartphones for everything - banking, shopping, private conversations, and storing personal photos. But did you know that by default, your phone might be leaking your location, tracking your habits, and sharing your data with advertisers.

Whether you are using an Android or an iPhone, security shouldn't be an afterthought. Here are 5 essential privacy settings you need to change immediately to lock down your smartphone and protect your digital life.

1. Turn Off  Precise Location for Unnecessary Apps.

Most apps don't need to know exactly which street or building you are standing in. Food delivery or maps need your exact location, but your wallpaper app, keyboard, or casual games definitely do not.

What to do - Go to your phone's Settings > Location / Privacy > App Permissions.

Look for apps that don't require your exact coordinates and toggle off Use Precise Location (or change it to Approximate Location). This keeps your exact movements private and saves battery life too.

2. Revoke Microphone and Camera Access.

Have you ever talked about a specific shoe brand with a friend, only to see an ad for those exact shoes on Instagram 10 minutes later? While tech companies deny they are listening, it is safer to revoke camera and microphone permissions for apps that don't need them.

What to do - Inspect your app list under Settings > Privacy > Permission Manager

Ensure that only video calling or recording apps have access to your camera and microphone. If a flashlight or calculator app is asking for microphone access, deny it immediately.

3. Disable Personalised Ads Tracking.

Both Google and Apple track your browsing history and app usage to build an "advertising profile" of you. This profile is used to target you with specific ads across the internet.

For Android - Go to Settings > Privacy > Ads and tap on - Delete Advertising ID.

For iPhone - Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and toggle off  Allow Apps to Request to Track.

Pro-Tip - Turning this off won't reduce the number of ads you see, but it completely stops companies from tracking your personal interests and selling your data.

4. Hide Sensitive Notifications on Your Lock Screen.

By default, when you get a WhatsApp message or an OTP (One-Time Password) from your bank, it pops up on your lock screen for anyone to see. If your phone is left unattended on a desk, someone could easily peek at your private messages or verification codes.

What to do - Go to Settings > Notifications > Lock Screen Notifications.

Change the setting to Hide Content or Show Alerts Only When Unlocked. This ensures that notifications are only visible after your phone recognizes your face or fingerprint.

 5. Clean Up Your Google / Apple Account Saved Passwords & Activity.

If someone gains access to your main Google or Apple ID, they get access to everything. It is crucial to clean up old devices and check what data is being saved.

What to do - Visit your Google Account Settings (or iCloud Settings). Turn off  Web & App Activity if you don't want Google saving every single search or website you visit.

Also do a quick Security Checkup to see if any old, unused phones or laptops are still logged into your account, and remove them.

Conclusion

Your smartphone is an extension of your life, and securing it only takes 5 minutes. By turning off precise location, stopping ad tracking, and hiding lock-screen content, you take back control of your personal data from advertisers and snoopers.
